In Loving Memory of Ajay Salvi : Remembering a Talented, Hardworking, and Humble Human Being - Mahesh Gharat

Photographer Ajay Salvi, who worked on over 700 ad campaigns including the visually arresting Rajasthan Tourism campaign of 2015, passed away this week. Former Ogilvy South CCO and filmmaker Mahesh Gharat patribute.

I have known Ajay Salvi since 2000.

We worked together on many projects.

He was responsible for creating stunning photographs for SBI Debit Card “Ex pickpocketer” campaign (year 2006) and one of the iconic works on Rajasthan Tourism (year 2015).

In September 2014, when I was working on Rajasthan tourism, I called him to discuss the “Jane kya dikhjaye” idea. He immediately said let’s do it. I told him that the campaign was massive and it would take 20 to 25 days to shoot it. He said not to worry and that we will manage. He immediately packed his bags and started exploring new places in Rajasthan. It is one of the biggest states in India. And we want to explore new places that no one has shown before. It was a monumental task, but he didn’t let it bother him because when he takes on a project, he always gives 200 percent. That had always been his nature.

While searching for magical places in Rajasthan, he discovered a site called ‘Garadia Mahadev’ near Kota (one island surrounded by the Chambal River). At that time, it was unknown to tourists. Only a few locals used to go there for religious purposes. But with Ajay’s eyes and magic, that place became one of the most visited tourist attractions. His photo of the area was so great that we used it in the film.

For the Rajasthan campaign, we shot for more than 45 days. This habit of not settling for less ensured that the final product was always perfect.

His contribution to the many beautiful images of Rajasthan made one of the most memorable campaigns in the tourism sector and in my career.

We have lost talented, hardworking, humble human being.

And I have lost my dearest Friend.

Ajay we will miss you.
