PepsiCo India Empowers Waste Workers to Become Waste Professionals

PepsiCo Foundation, along with Recity Network & Mathura Vrindavan Nagar Nigam, launched ‘Purna – Unnati ki Sajhedaari’ initiative last year.

The initiative is launched with an aim to transform waste workforces into waste professionals, and focuses on developing a circular, equitable and inclusive model of effective waste management in Mathura-Vrindavan.

By adopting a circular and inclusive approach to #BeatPlasticPollution, PepsiCo Foundation, Recity and Mathura-Vrindavan Nagar Nigam have now professionalised over 100 waste workers, reached over 20,000 citizens, and engaged 10 lakh tourists and 7,000 school children on waste segregation. 4,000 property units were made aware about waste segregation and have so far diverted a total of 500 MT of municipal waste.

Garima Singh, Chief Government Affairs and Communications Officer, PepsiCo India, said, “As we celebrate World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to preserving and protecting our planet. We recognize the immense responsibility we have towards the environment and firmly believe in the power of innovation and collaboration to create a sustainable future. Our dedicated teams have been working tirelessly to develop groundbreaking solutions to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic waste. We are grateful to the Government of Uttar Pradesh for their unwavering support of the initiative and look forward to building on these remarkable milestones together. On this important day, we urge everyone to join hands in the fight against plastic pollution and create a greener future for generations to come.”

As part of the initiative, a Waste Intelligence Technology was deployed at Mathura Vrindavan Nagar Nigam (MVNN) for efficient waste collection services and on-ground resource management. As an expansion of the pilot project, PepsiCo Foundation with Recity also launched a special ‘Purna Swachhta Campaign’ in December 2022 and provided women waste workers an alternate source of livelihood by conducting ‘Organic Holi Colour Making’ workshop earlier this year. The campaign creates awareness around no littering, waste segregation and empowers the waste workforce of Mathura.
